Bishop Blase Cupich has announced the beginning of a search for a full-time Development Director to help build the financial stability of the diocese.
The position, then part-time, was held by Chris Smith from late 2005 until the end of 2011.
“Chris’s dedicated and fruitful work has blessed our diocese with a solid platform for creating a diocese-wide development program,” said Bishop Cupich. “His generous spirit and strong witness to faith laid a lasting foundation for the growth of future programs and efforts.”
The now full-time position will involve more than simply managing occasional fund-raising events. Major responsibilities will include executing annual diocesan collections, cultivating donors, conducting capital campaigns, fostering planned giving programs, writing grants, and overseeing office administration. The Development Director also will assist parishes and other Catholic entities in the diocese in the creation and enhancement of their own stewardship and development efforts.
Minimally, a candidate for the position should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field; three-five years’ experience in broad-based fundraising; and commitment to and understanding of the mission of the Church.
A candidate should also have familiarity with printing and publishing, and experience in budgeting, planning, and personnel management. Computer literacy, particularly in terms of accounting software, is required.
Candidates should have strong organizational and administrative skill sets, as well as experience in public speaking, writing, and other forms of communication. The Director also will need to work positively and creatively with others.
Although still in the planning stages, it is anticipated that the Director’s services will be shared contractually with The Catholic Foundation of Eastern Washington.
The Foundation invests endowment funds for the diocese and for other Catholic entities, such as schools and parishes. The Foundation also awards annual grants to help support Catholic ministry in the diocese.
Said Bishop Cupich: “The Foundation’s fund-raising and endowment management efforts share a common goal with those of the diocese’s Development Office: the short- and long-term financial stability of the mission of the local Catholic Church. Such a collaborative effort is filled with promise and potential.”
Applicants for the Development Director position are directed to make inquiry by e-mail to development@dioceseofspokane. org. Application deadline is June 1, 2012.
