St. Anthony, Spokane, continues centennial celebrationStory and photos by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register (From the July 1, 2010 edition of the Inland Register) St. Anthony Parish, Spokane, continued the celebration of the centennial of its establishment with a banquet dinner Sunday, June 13, at the Commons at Fort Wright.
Over 300 people, including parishioners and pastors, past and present, attended the dinner.
Alan Peterson, chairman of the parish’s Centennial Committee and a member of the present Deacon Formation class, greeted guests. Those attending were treated to reminiscences from several priests with ties to the parish, including Msgr. John Steiner, who attended the parish grade school, and former pastors.
Besides history and anecdotes, diners heard music performed by flautist Sandi Nokes, principal of Trinity School, and violinist Liz Lund, a strings teacher at Holy Names Music Center, both accompanied on piano by Holy Names Sister Kay Heberling, who also teaches at Holy Names.
During the evening, Father Joachim Hiên, pastor of St. Anthony, presented Bishop Skylstad with a new Ipad computer on behalf of the parish, in honor of the bishop’s 50th anniversary of priestly ordination, and in thanks for the bishop’s ministry to the Church in Eastern Washington. Father Hiên and the bishop joined forces to unveil a large framed document, a papal blessing for the parish in honor of its centennial.
