2010 Annual Catholic Appeal: A message from Bishop Skylstad(From the April 29, 2010 edition of the Inland Register) April 29, 2010 My dear People of God,
Preaching the Good News is our responsibility, but it is also an honor. I know that you understand the importance of the Church’s presence in our hurting world. Many of you give, not out of your abundance, but out of your need – truly sacrificial giving, a true example of stewardship of God’s gifts. I am so very grateful for your witness. I also want to thank our pastors who have worked so hard to make our Appeal a success, especially as we conclude the Year of the Priest. Support for ministry is our challenge, our responsibility, and our honor – clergy, Religious, and laity alike. Our diocesan Church also faces severe economic challenges. Our very dedicated diocesan staff has continued to shoulder a heavy burden without complaint, recognizing the importance of our mission and ministry throughout Eastern Washington. We have pared our costs as deeply as possible. Our staff, too, has exercised their own stewardship with great responsibility and respect for the gifts you have entrusted to us in order to do the Church’s work. Though the response to this year’s Appeal has been very heartening, we have yet to reach this year’s goal of $2.24 million for this year. Currently 20 parishes have reached 100 percent of their goal. Some 33.7 percent of our households have donated or pledged to this year’s Appeal. Yet we still face a shortfall of approximately $347,341. And so once again, I ask that those of you who have not yet made a gift or pledge consider doing so today. Your support is especially crucial to the successful support for the Church’s ministry in Eastern Washington. Please prayerfully consider this request. Be as generous as you possibly can be. At all times, in all things, know that I thank God for these years as your bishop. You continue to inspire me with your commitment, your discipleship, and your stewardship. I am, and always will be, deeply grateful for your presence in my life and in the life of the Church. Your brother in Christ,
+ William S. Skylstad
