Service project results

The eighth grade class at St. Mary School, Spokane Valley, organized a service project to help the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia. The project began with student research on various relief organizations and moved to what items were needed for victim relief. Teams of students went to each lower grade classroom, where the eighth graders shared their research and collected money that students brought. During this weeklong effort they collected $1,097.05, which was sent to Catholic Relief Services. The children presented their class money jars at the weekly school Mass Jan. 13. Cathedral offers Lenten Eucharist series

Father Rory Pitstick S.S.L. will make a series of four presentations during Lent at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave. in Spokane.

The series is titled “Spiritual Checkup in the Year of the Eucharist.” The four-part series will focus on the context of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

All will take place Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.: Feb. 16 and 23, March 2 and 9.

As the presentations are within the setting of Exposition, in the Cathedral Church, they offer a unique opportunity for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. They will close with Benediction.

The scheduled topics:

  • Feb. 16: Taking your spiritual vitals: What are the vital signs of spiritual life, and how are they read?
  • Feb. 23: Diagnosing spiritual diseases, their sinful symptoms.
  • March 2: Prevention and cure: Sticking to the Divine Diet and forming a routine of essential spiritual exercises.
  • March 9: Olympic Training: Working up to the Celestial Workout Plan.

    Help from the firemen

    At Austen Manor in Clarkston, a Catholic Charities-sponsored housing development, area firemen dropped by recently to take the residents’ blood pressure. The residents lined up to see the firemen as word went around they had arrived. They joked and had fun with the residents – lots of laughs at the property for the time they were there.
