Deacon J. Andrew Phelps MD (right) will present a three-part Lenten series on the medical aspects of the Crucifixion during February.

“A Physician Studies the Passion and Crucifixion” will take place Sundays in the auditorium of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave. in Spokane. The presentations are scheduled for 10-11 a.m.

Deacon Phelps is a retired surgeon. His three discussions will attempt to offer some insight into what is really meant by “the Passion and Death of Jesus.”

The talks include:

Feb. 13: “The Prelude.” What do the Gospels actually say? When did the suffering begin? Psychological and physiological aspects of the Agony in the Garden.

Feb. 20: “The ‘Preparation’ of the Victim.” Aspects of Jesus’ imprisonment, scourging, the crowning with thorns, and the “Via Dolorosa.”

Feb. 27: “The Crucifixion.” The physiologic mechanisms of Crucifixion, including the nailing, and mental anguish.
