The Spokane Serra Club celebrated its 67th birthday recently with a dinner party at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Outgoing president Don Kelly (right) marked the occasion by presenting a check for $8,000 to Father Darrin Connall, rector of Bishop White Seminary. The donation was made toward the Campaign for the Education of Seminarians. Serra seeks to promote the individual spirituality of members and encourage vocations to the priesthood and Religious life. The Association of Parish Ministers (APM) recently chose new officers for the coming year.

Tara Young-Brown, director of Newman Ministries at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, was elected president

Vice-president is Jim Tevenan, music director of St. Augustine Parish, Spokane.

Diana Sanderson, director of adult education at St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley, was elected secretary.

Treasurer for the coming year is Rita Cosby, religious education coordinator at St. John Vianney Parish, Spokane Valley.

The APM is open to all pastoral ministers, full- or part-time, paid or volunteer, as a source of support, professional and personal, for members.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace celebrated jubilees of profession earlier this month at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue, Wash.

Among those marking an anniversary was Sister Jackie (Michelle) Welch, who notes her 50th jubilee.

Sister Jackie was born in North Dakota, but grew up in Bonners Ferry, Idaho and Spokane. She was received by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Bellingham, Wash., in 1954 and began her 47 years of teaching in Catholic schools at Immaculate Conception School in Mt Vernon, Wash., by 1956. She received her Bachelor in Education from Seattle University in 1963 and later earned a Masters at Gonzaga University.

She taught in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington, and at St. Francis Xavier School in Spokane, where she also served as principal. Sister Jackie also taught for 18 years at Assumption School, Spokane, from which she retired last year.

“These past 50 years as a sister of St. Joseph of Peace have allowed me to serve others not only in education but in service to families,” she said.

Also honored were Sister Louise DuMont (60 years), Sister Grace DiDomenicantonio (50 years), and Sister Charlotte Davenport (25 years).

Concelebrating the jubilee Mass was Anchorage Archbishop Roger Schwietz OMI and Father Steve Moore, a priest of the Anchorage Archdiocese.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave. in Spokane, will again host the Corpus Christi Flower Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13.

Featured events include processions with the Blessed Sacrament at all Masses; Benediction, outdoors, with the Blessed Sacrament after the 11 a.m. Sunday Mass; strawberries and ice cream after Benediction; tours of the cathedral at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.; and a display of hundreds of flowers, donated by parishioners in memory of loved ones.

The choir concert begins at 2 p.m. The program includes two 20th century choral works: Daniel Pinkham’s “Wedding Cantata” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’s “Five Mystical Songs.” The program also will include works by Beethovan, Orlando de Lasso, Maurice Duruflé, and John Rutter, with additional performances by organist Keith Thomas and trumpeter Chris Cook.

A free-will offering at the concert “will be greatly appreciated.”

The first graders won the breakfast event by bringing in the most “Boxtops for Education” during a recent collection drive.
