IDAHO
Diocese of Boise MERIDIAN — Holy Apostles Parish Conference of St. Vincent de Paul and the parish’s Christmas Giving Tree project received the Counselor’s Advocate of the Year award from the Meridian School District Counselors. Plaques noting the award were presented to representatives at the annual Professional Recognition and Counselor Week celebration held in February. The parish conference collaborates with four other conferences and the thrift store to provide basic needs for people in those areas. With eight other churches, the Ada Country St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Food Project provided 1,450 food boxes during the 2003 holiday season. The Giving Tree project collected over 1,000 presents and 200 food boxes for distribution at Christmas.
MERIDIAN — A Holy Apostles Parish small faith community called the Rosary Makers recently paid a visit to Bishop Sylvester Treinen House of Discernment and Formation in Boise, bearing lunch and gifts. The Rosary Makers make it a practice to attend functions or visit Catholic agencies and programs in the area so they “know what is going on” and can be informed of the church’s many evangelization efforts.
BOISE — Corpus Christi House is a new Catholic Worker house offering a full range of services each day to the people who go there. The house, on Americana Blvd., is completely funded by donations and staffed by volunteers. Donations came from every Catholic church in Boise. Strong support was also received from the Mennonine and Methodist communities. Services, which are all free, include shower and laundry facilities, a computer, telephones and a place to get shelter from the cold. —The Idaho Register, Boise

Archdiocese of Portland PORTLAND — Holy Rosary Parish celebrated 110 years of ministry. It is one of the older parishes in the Archdiocese of Portland, which is the second-oldest archdiocese in the U.S.
PORTLAND — St. Pius X Parish held its annual Multicultural Day March 14, celebrating the various cultural and ethnic heritages of the community. A special Mass featured costumes, prayer, decorations, and music from the many cultures.
FOREST GROVE — Volunteers at St. Anthony Parish will minister from their kitchens by preparing meals for parishioners who suffer a sudden disability or sickness and need help for a couple of weeks or so.
GRESHAM — St. Henry Parish did a major clean-up and repair after frigid weather caused water pipes to burst. Five offices were soaked and carpet had to be removed.
PORTLAND — Children at St. Stanislaus Parish brought the largest flower they could find to church on Palm Sunday, following a Polish tradition. In Poland, the object was to bring the pussywillow with the longest bloom.
PORTLAND — Holy Cross Church was host to a cardinal recently, the kind with the red hat. Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil is head of a diocese in southwest India. He presided at Mass for the children in Holy Cross School and in a visit with them, said that elephants are an everyday sight where he lives. The cardinal is an uncle of one of Holy Cross’s parishioners and had stopped to vacation in the United States after meetings in Rome.
PORTLAND — An Irish restaurant downtown has an unusual way to collect donations. Customers throw money up to the ceiling where it sticks. Whatever sticks is swept off right before St. Patrick’s Day and Kell’s Irish Restaurant and Pub matches the amount. This year’s donation totaled $7,136, the largest ever. The money is donated to Providence Child Center, a pediatric residential facility for children with profound disabilities and complex medical needs.
— Catholic Sentinel, Portland PORTLAND — The annual Worldwide Marriage Encounter convention will be held in Portland Aug. 6-8. All couples who have attended a WWME weekend are invited to attend. Convention theme is “You Have to Believe” which will be developed in three sessions: “To Know God,” “To Love God,” and “To Serve God.” Bishop Skylstad of Spokane will concelebrate Mass with other priests on Aug. 8.
