Editor: Being a single myself, and thus “taking the solo flight,” I appreciated Patrick Kirlin’s letter in the Feb. 28 edition of the Inland Register about singles life. Some time ago, I read an article on this subject, titled “Is there seating for one in the Church?” It noted several books on the subject, and I include the titles in case someone would like to investigate this subject:
• One Like Jesus, by Debra K. Farrington. I have read Jean Sheridan’s book and liked it very much (she includes “willing celibates” also). It includes chapters on parish life, participation in intentional communities, friendship with solitude, living a personal rule, and spirituality of the home. She also tells how much singles need the attention of others. She tells of what it was like when she first became a single after husband and children were gone – “Singles are sole mirrors of themselves. All their decisions are made by themselves alone. All their fears are met alone. All their triumphs are celebrated alone. All their failures are endured alone. All their heartbreaks are suffered alone.”
