Grandparents and Special Persons Day
the Inland Register
(From the Dec. 7, 2006 edition of the Inland Register)
Recently St. Mary School in Spokane Valley hosted
Grandparents and Special Persons day. The event is held each year on the
Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Students are encouraged to invite their grandparents and other special people to the school
for Mass and a program. The students each make a gift. Every class prepares a song, poem, skit or recitation for the
program and the Church is decorated to enhance the unique theme of the day. This year’s theme was a celebration of “hearts
and hands.” The students wrote their names on hearts and the names of their grandparents/special persons on hands and they
were connected and attached to a “family tree” that was displayed during the celebration. After the Mass and program,
students and their guests returned to the classroom to enjoy refreshments. In the photo above, Dylan McGillen and his
grandmother enjoy some time together in the third grade classroom; at right, fourth grader Eric Holden and his grandfather
get ready to leave for the holiday weekend. (IR photos from St. Mary School, Spokane Valley)
