Young adults invited to second year of Theology on Tap

Young adults interested in the Catholic faith are invited to a second round of “Theology on Tap,” located at Heroes and Legends sports bar on the corner of Riverside and Lincoln in Spokane.

Four sessions next month, the Tuesday evenings in October, will provide speakers addressing various aspects of Catholicism in an informal, question-and-answer format.

The evenings begin at 7 p.m.; presentations and discussions start at 7:30 p.m.

The schedule includes:

• Oct. 4: Dr. Doug Kries, philosophy professor at Gonzaga University, will discuss “St. Francis of Assisi: Questions and Controversies.”
• Oct. 11: “Does God Have a Plan for My Life?” with Father Darrin Connall, Vocations Director of the Spokane Diocese and rector of Bishop White Seminary.
• Oct. 18: Msgr. John Steiner, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley, will present “Benedict: What’s in a Name?” – a discussion ranging from St. Benedict, Pope Benedict XV, and why Pope Benedict XVI chose the name for himself.
• Oct. 25: “Just in Time for Halloween” will feature the surprising connections between Count Dracula, the Scream films, and the Catholic view of “what makes us tick.” Guest speaker will be Lyra Pitstick, who recently completed a doctorate in theology from the University of St. Thomas, Rome.

Participants do not have to be 21 to attend.

For more information, call Eric Thomason: 926-9559, ext. 20.

St. Joseph offers free depression screening

St. Joseph Family Center will be offering free screening for depression as part of National Depression Screening Day on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Center, 1016 N. Superior in Spokane.

The screening will include an informational session, a confidential questionnaire, and an opportunity to meet privately with a St. Joseph counselor. In all, the process is expected to take about 30 minutes. Walk-ins are highly encouraged; no appointments are necessary.

“We are very happy that we can offer such a vital service to members of our community,” said Sister Elaine Thaden, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia who serves as Executive Director of St. Joseph. “Now we just hope people will show up and use it to make their lives better.”
