Trinity students offer money collected for Hurricane Katrina victims to Father Joe Hiên at their student Mass. The students from the school have collected almost $500 and will send the money to Catholic Relief Services to help Catholic school children affected by the disaster. The eighth grade cheerleaders for Assumption School, Spokane, worked with their parents to offer a benefit car wash in the parking lot of the Yokes Grocery on Indian Trail Sept. 4 to raise money for the Gulf Port American Red Cross disaster relief efforts. The cheerleaders raised $911, which is being matched by ICM Asset Management, Inc. in downtown Spokane, for a total donation of $1,922. Initially, the fund-raiser was to help with the cost of uniforms and activities, but when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the cheerleaders decided to target their efforts towards this great need. Students at St. Mary School, Spokane Valley, collected items for families who suffered losses during Hurrican Katrina. Clothing for men, women and children, shoes, toys, books, linens, school supplies, food and money were collected. In collaboration with St. Mary Parish, the students packed so many boxes that they almost filled a 24-foot U-haul trailer. Alumnnus Mark Ness worked with his company, North Idaho Credit, to deliver the goods to the 2,000 people who were scheduled to go to Fort Lewis for temporary housing. On the day of the pickup, the plan to house them at Fort Lewis was cancelled. With the help of the Coeur d’Alene firefighters and John Corcoran from REMAX by the Lake, items were unloaded and stored temporarily in Coeur d’Alene for delivery by the Salvation Army to the needy families. Pictured are the seventh and eighth graders who helped sort and pack the truck. (IR photo from St. Mary School)
