Father Patrick Hartin, canonical pastor of St. Paschal Parish in Spokane Valley, recently received honors in the 2004 Catholic Press Association book awards.

Father Hartin’s book, James, was awarded third place in the Scripture category for books in this year’s competition.

The citation for the award says Father “Hartin writes clearly about complex theological realities.” The book will be “valued by Catholic and other readers.”

Published by Liturgical Press of Collegeville, Minn., James discusses the New Testament Epistle of James, “one of the most neglected writings in the New Testament.”

In addition to his parish duties, Father Hartin teaches New Testament at Gonzaga University.

Jesuit Father Tim Clancy, pastor of Our Lady of the Lake, Suncrest – the Spokane Diocese’s newest parish – also teaches at Gonzaga University.

The university announced recently that Father Clancy has been promoted from assistant profesor of philosophy to associate professor of philosophy.

In addition, Father Clancy has been granted tenure at the university.

Gonzaga Prep’s two “Destination Imagination” teams took high honors during competition earlier this year.

“The Plot and the Pendulum Challenge” team took first place, the DaVinci Award for creativity, and the Renaissance Award for outstanding skills in engineering, design and performance. Team members included Ann Freeman, Elaine Johnson, Jake Longworth, Sarah Mimms, and Hillary Zampich-Gibbs.

The second team, “Destinations in Time Challenge,” took second place and also earned a DaVince Award. Team members were Chris Clark, Braden Fetz, Dom Metcalf, Pat Michaud, and Brendan Sowers.

Catholic Charities’ Childbirth and Parenting Along (CAPA) Program is recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors to young, single, pregnant women in the Doula Project.

Volunteers – “Doulas” – support and encourage single parents through the prenatal, birthing, and early parenting experiences. Doulas make a one-year commitment of two hours per week with the young, single parent. The volunteers must themselves be a parent, have a high school diploma or GED, and be at least 26 years old. Training will begin in the autumn.

Gonzaga Prep has released a list of Arrupe and Ignatian scholars – “students with vision and intelligence, who show concern for others,” and who take advantage of their Jesuit education “by pursuing an academic excellence in service to others.”

Arrupe Scholars are granted a $250 book credit at Prep’s bookstore toward the upcoming school year’s textbooks. Ignatian Scholars receive a $100 credit.

Ignatian Scholars are James Nathan McKenna and Christopher Rice, St. Charles; Noah Rinaldi, Holy Family; August Faller, Classical Christian Academy; Marisa Poorboy, Canfield Middle School; Melanie Betz, All Saints; Katie Metzger, St. Mary; and Darin McQuesten, St. Thomas More.
