Archdiocese of Portland
EUGENE — Junior high students at St. Paul Parish are planning a trip in July 2004 that will take them to New York City. They hope to attend a Broadway play and a baseball game.

Diocese of Baker
BAKER CITY — The Diocese of Baker celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, with a special section in the Catholic Sentinel devoted to its history. The centennial culminated with a special Mass held Oct. 10 in Baker City. First bishop was Charles O’Reilly; his current successor is Bishop Robert Vasa. His predecessor, emeritus Bishop Thomas Connolly, continues to serve Catholics even though he is “retired.” The cathedral in Baker City is named for St. Francis deSales. The diocese is large, geographically, with many scattered cities and towns.
ONTARIO — Once a month Blessed Sacrament Parish will hold a dance for middle schoolers. The disc jockey is a parish religious education teacher who just happens to be a detective on the Ontario police force. More than 260 young people came to the Sept. 5 dance.

MONTANA
Diocese of Helena

HELENA — Father Jim Hazelton was in town recently, to celebrate the 39th annual “Hazy Day” and the beginning of his 40th year in Guatemala. In 1963, the diocese, under then Bishop Raymond Hunthausen, sent its first missionaries to that country. “Hazy Day” is held to keep Montana Catholics informed of missionary happenings in Guatemala and to raise funds for its mission work there. Those who attend enjoy food, games, and an auction. Those who attend can shop for Guatemalan crafts, enjoy food and games, and attend an auction. This year’s event raised over $21,000.

WASHINGTON
Diocese of Yakima

YAKIMA — The Kateri Circle of White Swan, Wapato and Toppenish traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D., last summer to attend the 64th annual Kateri Tekakwitha Conference. Eight people from the diocese joined over 1,000 other members of 117 Kateri Circles from across the United States. Also attending were Bishop Charles Chaput OFM of Denver and Bishop Donald Pelotte SSS of Gallup, New Mexico, both of whom are Indians. The Conference focuses on Indian expressions of Catholicism.

Archdiocese of Seattle

SEATTLE — Twenty-two teens from an orphanage in Mexico came to the diocese to present cultural performances of music and dance in Seattle, Bellevue and Sumner. Their annual visit is sponsored by Friends of the Orphans Northwest. The young people come to western Washington to raise funds for eight orphanages called “Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos” (Our Little Brothers and Sisters). Father William Wasson founded the first orphanage in 1954.
STEVENSON — The world’s largest collection of rosaries, 4,000 of them, are housed in a museum in the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center. The rosaries were collected by the late Donald Brown, and the collection includes one from Padre Pio who was recently canonized and one from the late John Kennedy. There is also a 15-decade rosary that was handmade by Sister Lucia de Santos, one of the three Fatima children. What makes the collection unique is that there is a documented history for each rosary. The rosaries are made of every material except feathers; the oldest date from the 18th century.

 VANCOUVER, WASH. — This is how the new Life Teen middle school youth ministry is being advertised at St. Joseph Parish: “Club LT. New and improved, with more sin-fighting power! Guaranteed to get Jesus in and sin out!” The group meets every Wednesday and also attends a Life Teen Mass each Sunday evening.

Diocese of Boise

BOISE — Catholics in the Boise area gathered on Respect Life Sunday, Oct. 5, to form a Chain of Life around the Towne Square Mall for two hours to show their support for life.
