The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes hosts its annual Advent Festival this year beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21.

Proceeds from the festival benefit outreach programs to the downtown neighborhood.

Besides crafts, bazaar and baked goods, the festival includes a Friday evening auction, family-oriented activities on Saturday, and the famous French toast breakfast on Sunday morning.

Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane bestowed its Sister Peter Claver award on two individuals who personify “humility and integrity” and who “are dedicated to the service of humanity.”

Dr. Arch Logan retired more than 15 years ago, but continues to serve at the House of Charity, providing free medical care to the poor and Spokane’s “street people.” He also volunteers with Meals on Wheels.

Clarence “Joe” Legel” is the recipient of the Sister Peter Claver Lifetime Achievement Award for his role as “financial watchdog” for Providence Sisters ministries, including work as chief financial officer of the Medical Center.

Among this year’s nominees were Donna Hanson, Bishop’s Secretary for Social Ministries and Diocesan Director of Catholic Charities, and Mary Butler, Victims Assistance Coordinator for the Diocese of Spokane.

Richard Fox, center for Gonzaga University’s basketball team, was the celebrity reader for the 7th/8th grade class at St. Paschal School on Oct. 23. All Saints School will feature “Winter Wonderland” as the theme of their annual auction event on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Spokane Fairgrounds.

All Saints is an interparochial school with participation from St. Peter, Our Lady of Fatima, and St. Ann parishes.

The event includes dinner, both live and silent auctions, a Christmas craft store, and more.

Proceeds benefit the school’s Fair Share program.

The League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) has given a Gold Award to the “Postcards from St. Margaret’s” project during the LACP’s 2003 Spotlight Awards.

The “Postcards” project came in second of 23 entries in the competition.

The postcards feature art work by local women and children and mailed monthly to friends of St. Margaret Shelter, a Catholic Charities’ facility for homeless women and their children in Spokane.

This is the second year for the project.

During 2002, the project generated some $34,766 in revenue. Fifty percent of the residents at St. Margaret participate in the writing workshops.

Last May the project won the Spokane Public Relations Council’s Dussault Award.
