Spokane Diocese eases process for reporting abusethe Inland Register (From the Oct. 23, 2003 edition of the Inland Register) A brochure was distributed throughout all the parishes of the diocese for Respect Life Sunday. The brochure was titled “A Safe Net for Children and Youth” and described a number of aspects of child sexual abuse: signs of abuse; behaviors typical of abusers; and how to bring a complaint to the diocese is abuse has occurred. “We understand that bringing a misconduct complaint to the diocese can be a frightening experience,” the brochure says. “We want to make this process as safe and non- stressful as possible, which is why we have designed several reporting methods. We hope you will choose the option that feels most comfortable to you.” The following options are suggested:
• Call the Assistance coordinator, Mary Butler, at (509) 353-0442 P.O. Box 1453 Spokane, WA 99210 Address your letter to any of these individuals:
• Bishop William Skylstad Or, you may request your counselor or your attorney to contact us. We have found that the process works best when the person bringing the complaint has the support of a knowledgeable companion, often referred to as an advisor/advocate. An advisor/advocate can accompany you at any stage of the process. We will also help you to bring your concerns to church officials outside the Diocese if the abuse, exploitation or harassment occurred elsewhere and you now reside in the Catholic Diocese of Spokane. If you are unsure about bringing a complaint or would like further information, please contact:
