Archdiocese of Portland FOREST GROVE — Parishioners at St. Anthony Parish donated over $2,200 to help build a rectory at St. Kizito Secondary School in Umachima, Nigeria. INDEPENDENCE — A guitar group with about 40 young people and adults has formed in St. Patrick Parish. The St. Patrick 4-H Guitar Club meets once or twice a week to practice and is slated to perform at two upcoming fairs.
WASHINGTON SEATTLE — Five members of two parishes, Holy Family in Kirkland and St. John the Evangelist in Seattle, took a 10-day trip to Nguludi Parish in Malawi to discern the possibility of a sister-parish relationship. St. John Parish already supports an AIDS ministry there. —The Catholic Northwest Progress, Seattle SEATTLE — Pax Christi Pacific Northwest will hold its annual regional assembly, “From Darkness to Light – The Long Term Struggle,” Saturday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at DayBreak Star Indian Cultural Center at Discovery Park in Seattle. The gathering will be an opportunity for peace activists to listen to native peoples, share dialogue with Native American elders and others and also participate in “Talking Circles.” The day includes lunch, child care and a youth program. There is no cost; but free-will donations will be gratefully accepted. Pre-registration is requested and is required for day care and the youth program. Call 206-937-0549.
Diocese of Boise MOSCOW — A welcome-back barbecue for new and returning students was held Sept. 7 at St. Augustine Catholic Center on the University of Idaho campus. Father Len MacMillan is campus minister and chaplain at the center, which is located next to the university’s bookstore on the east side of the campus. Daily Mass is offered at 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Sunday Mass times are 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Student programs and activities include prayer groups, Friday pizza and movies, communal meals, social justice dinners, social outings and a mini-theology classes on a variety of subjects. Father MacMillan will a Scripture class on the Gospel of Luke during the fall semester at 7 p.m. DESMET — The youth group from St. Pius X Parish in Coeur d’Alene put on a Vacation Bible School for the children at Sacred Heart Mission in Desmet. The group, led by youth minister Brian Kraut, used funds from its spring rummage sale to make the week possible. The youth group used the SCUBA (Super Cool Undersea Bible Adventure) program, which featured Jonah, the whale and an underwater theme. Between 30 and 40 children attended each day. Two afternoons were spent at Rocky Point on Lake Coeur d’Alene.
