The Poor Clare Sisters in Spokane will be adding to their media ministry with the inaugural episode of Northwest Catholic Radio.

The weekly hour-long production, a mix of national and local items, premiers Sunday, Oct. 5, at 9 p.m. on KGA, 1510 AM.

“There is no doubt that the Church is getting its share of bad news from every side,” said Sister Patricia Proctor. “It is up to us now, each and every one – to share some ‘good news’ about the Church as well.”

Each program will include feature stories, a calendar, inspiration and encouragement from the Poor Clare Sisters in Spokane, and segments from Catholic Radio Weekly, produced by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Catholic Communication Campaign.

The Monastery of St. Clare in Spokane already works in the Internet, through web sites, web site design, and inspiration e-mail messages.

Earlier this year the monastery published 101 Inspirational Stories of the Rosary, which has remained on the Catholic booksellers’ best-seller list almost since its debut (“Spokane’s Poor Clares monastery publishes collection of rosary stories,” IR 04/10/03). Proceeds from sales of that volume are being used to fund Northwest Catholic Radio.

The 2003 Catholic Conference is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Doubletree Hotel, Spokane City Center.

This year’s focus will be on liturgy, particularly as some changes in the celebration of Mass take effect this Advent. The theme for the conference is “Real Presence in the Real Present.”

Nathan Mitchell, professor of liturgy and an associate director for research at the Center for Pastoral Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame, will give the keynote address. In addition, Mitchell will give two workshops. One workshop is titled “Real Presence: The Eucharist Makes the Church,” based on a quote from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Nineteen other workshops are scheduled in three sessions. Bishop Skylstad will present “Justice – Foundation for Peace.” Father Steve Dublinski, chairman of the Diocesan Liturgy Commission, will address the changes in the celebration of the Eucharist. Father Mike Savelesky’s workshop is titled “Completion or Confusion? Celebrating Confirmation with Eucharist.” Kathy Finley will address the Catholic view of marriage and how the Church can annul a marriage that has existed for years in her presentation, “Faith-full Love: Marriage in the Church.”
