Archbishop John Quinn, retired archbishop of San Francisco, will speak on “Shaping a New Kind of Papal Government: A Permanent Synod” on Monday, Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. in the COG on the Gonzaga University campus.

His lecture is sponsored by the Diocese of Spokane, Gonzaga University, and Catholic Charities’ Parish Social Ministry Office.

Archbishop Quinn was ordained for the Diocese of San Diego in 1953. He was named an auxiliary bishop of that diocese in 1967, and became bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa in 1971. When Oklahoma City became an archdiocese later that year, he was its first archbishop. He moved to San Francisco in 1977.

Archbishop Quinn is the author of The Reform of the Papacy: The Costly Call to Christian Unity. The book, published in four languages in addition to English, was his response to Pope John Paul II’s invitation to the bishops of the world in the pontiff’s encyclical That They May Be One, addressing issues of Christian unity.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

The fourth season of “Music at St. Augustine” concerts begins next month with a program performed by James Tevenan, the parish’s organist and music director, and Larry Jess, principal trumpet for the Spokane Symphony.

Their concert is set for Wednesday, Sept. 10, at St. Augustine Church, on the corner of 19th and Bernard in Spokane.

Admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted.

On Sunday, Sept. 7, friends and parishioners of St. Joseph Parish, 1503 W. Dean in Spokane, will celebrate the church building’s centennial.

The event will include an 11 a.m. Mass in English and Spanish. Tours of the building will be available from 1-3 p.m., and refreshments will be served.

Records indicate construction began in 1903; the completed structure was blessed later that year.

The Optimist Club of Downtown Spokane recently presented a check for $8,375 to the Transitions programs – among them, the Women’s Drop-In Center, Miryam’s House, and the Transitional Living Center. The check was presented at a thank-you picnic for Transitions volunteers and supporters.

The Friends of Transitions have themselves raised some $12,000 this year to help support the programs, which assist women.

The Optimists’ check was the result of a fund-raiser golf tournament last spring at Qualchan Golf Course.

SpokaneWorks pairs individuals with people who are attempting to make the transition from welfare to work. The SpokaneWorks volunteers help mentor and empower those making the life-changing move. Volunteers are needed for a variety of options; among them: transportation, tutoring adults and/or children, telephone reassurance, and teaching life skills.
