WASHINGTON
Archdiocese of Seattle YELM — Maybe the youth group at St. Columban Parish has it backwards. They do their car washes in December. For the past five years, the group has held what they call “The Icicle Car Wash” in their church parking lot. Proceeds to the United Community Betterment Organization, a social service operation that includes a food bank and baby corner. Then again, as co-youth leader Paul Carroll explains, maybe it’s not such a bad idea. “People feel sorry for us,” he said. “And they’re very generous.” At their last car wash, the group raised $470.

MOSCOW — The first and sixth graders at St. Mary School in Moscow worked together on a special “buddy” project. They participated in Amnesty International’s Holiday Card Action in honor of Martin Luther King. The children learned about Martin Luther King, how children think of him as a hero and yet he was sent to jail. They learned about “prisoners of conscience,” people who are in jail for taking part in peaceful demonstrations, protesting against unfair laws or civil rights abuses. Then they send messages of hope to a current prisoner. This year, the students sent cards to Father Thadeus Nguyen Van Ly, a long-time outspoken advocate for religious freedom in Vietnam. The priest was sentenced to 15 years for exercising his right to freedom of expression and religion. The children also pray for the prisoner.

CAMAS, WASH. — Chef Brian Quinn, a member of St. Agatha Parish, is a man with a mission beyond the sauté pan. He led a workshop at his church recently that helped participants learn how families can make meals a sacred time that promotes togetherness. The chef is concerned about people growing up not knowing how to cook and how they will miss experiences that make life rich: “serving one another, enjoying good meals and lingering in fellowship over the plates.” Quinn brought a portable stove and used it to whip up a meal at the workshop, showing how the children could help.
