OREGON
Archdiocese of Portland EUGENE — High school teens at St. Mark Parish hosted the annual Gravy Bowl, a flag football tourney held on the day after Thanksgiving. Seven local parishes played in the contest. The team from St. Jude, St. Alice, and St. Catherine won the top trophy, a gravy bowl. The game was followed by the Gravy Bowl Ball, hosted by St. Helen Parish in Junction City with an ’80s theme.

WASHINGTON
Archdiocese of Seattle

TACOMA — Nativity House, a homeless shelter and place to help families and individuals in need, opened a new building that is “bigger and better.” The original Nativity House opened on Christmas Eve 1979. Founder is Jesuit Father David Rothrock, who wanted to provide a daytime refuge from the loneliness and violence of the streets. Michael Tucci, who has been involved with Nativity House since 1982, chaired the $2.3 million campaign for a new building. Scott MacKay is executive director; he came from Boston College as a Jesuit Volunteer six years ago. The new house measures 8,400 square feet, 60 percent larger than the old facility, and the kitchen is 10 times as large. Nativity House is located at 2304 S. Jefferson.

Diocese of Yakima

YAKIMA — An estimated 350 walkers participated in the Yakima Walk for Life held Jan. 18, to note the 30th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Marchers walked from St. Paul Cathedral to the Naches Avenue Parkway. They came from all over the Yakima Valley and many carried pink or blue balloons in memory of the millions of babies aborted during the past 30 years.

Diocese of Great Falls-Billings

BILLINGS — Last fall 275 students in grades K-8 in the Billings Catholic Schools system enrolled in a Spanish language program. Teaching the younger students were older students from Montana State University at Billings, who donated their time and talent to the classes. The program is voluntary for the young people and there is a waiting list.

Diocese of Boise

COEUR D’ALENE — Holy Family Catholic School noted Catholic Schools Week in a significant way: It began a campaign to build a new school. Organizers hope to raise $2.8 million, and when the total gets to $1.5 million, they can begin work. Property has been purchased at Kathleen and Atlas roads in Coeur d’Alene to build a 34,000-square-foot facility. Even though the school has only been in operation since 1996, it already has cash and assets of $1 million. Holy Family is the only Catholic school in north Idaho. It is currently located at the St. Thomas Parish Center.
RATHDRUM — The Knights of Columbus have started a search for color pictures of the old front doors of St. Stanislaus Church. The Knights were to restore the church’s old front door windows, which were removed several years ago and now appear to be lost. Anyone having such a photo is asked to contact Ron Benne, 18074 N. JEROME — Parishioners from Jerome, Twin Falls and Boise have formed themselves into a group called “Capstones,” to make a connection between the state’s Catholics and the poor in Tijuana. The name was chosen since the “capstone is the block that completes a building and a Biblical metaphor for Jesus Christ.” The group was loosely formed as the Tijuana Orphanage Project. In 1997 members assisted St. Joseph Children’s Home in Tijuana. That work spread quickly to other Catholics in the Boise Diocese and to other programs in Tijuana that help the poor.
