IDAHO MOSCOW — Jesuit Father Armand Nigro conducted a week-long mission at St. Mary Parish starting Sunday, Jan. 18, with the theme “Five Truths of Our Christian Faith.” He celebrated the weekend’s Masses on both Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18-19, with the first session on Sunday at 7 p.m., titled “God — God’s Love for Us.” While in Moscow, Father Nigro also celebrated daily Mass and shared in other events of St. Mary Parish life.
BOISE — St. Mary Church hosted the Crosses of the Innocent, and erected 3,200 crosses on the lawn near the church Jan. 11, one for each of the surgical abortions performed each day in the United States. The church also held a prayer service in conjunction with the crosses’ installation. Jan. 22 was the 30th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision that allowed abortion in the United States.

McMINNVILLE — Youth minister Mike Douglass arranged a virtual train trek for the youth group of St. James Parish. After arriving at church, they were greeted with a sign that said “Welcome to St. James Station!” Additional signs led them to another placard which read “Where is the road you are on taking you?” Then they boarded a bus for visits to Linfield College, the home of a family touched by drug addiction, a chiropractor’s office and a family home. They learned about medical careers from students, the effects of a child’s drug abuse from the family and raising children from parents.

PUYALLUP — Many fire stations are noted for the good cooks to be found there. Students at All Saints School were treated to lunch cooked by Mike Johnson, a firefighter at Station 2 in Tacoma. Joan Otto, the All Saints cook, invites guest chefs once or twice a year. Johnson is husband to one of All Saints’ staff members. When Otto learned he cooked for the crews at his fire station, she invited him in. Other firefighters who have children at the school were also invited to assist. Johnson fixed a sweet and sour chicken dish with rice. Five firefighters from Puyallup and Fife were guests at the special meal. The students also were treated to a display of a 1947 fire engine.
