OREGON
Archdiocese of Portland • PORTLAND — The eight volunteers who have operated St. Vincent de Paul’s Antique Boutique since 1977 have closed up shop. They shut down the store at the request of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, since the Society is “going in a different direction now,” said executive director Bill Conyard. All together the eight volunteers served a total of 130 years in the boutique. Some of the volunteers will work in other areas of the St. Vincent store.
• PORTLAND — Parishioners at Sacred Heart Parish go out into their community to call on new neighbors and introduce their faith community. They hand out a brochure called “Welcome to Sacred Heart and the Neighborhood.”
• SHERWOOD — More than 100 parishioners of St. Francis Church signed up for the Race for the Cure, a walk and run in Portland that benefits breast cancer research. Several buses took parishioners to the big city for the event, after which they enjoyed a potluck picnic.
• CORBETT — The debut “Jesus Jamboree” was held in Aug. 19-23 at Camp Howard. The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon teamed up with CYO/Camp Howard to present this first production. The jamboree featured “in class” travel to foreign countries to study the cultures and the way they relate to Jesus. Projects included storytelling, arts and crafts, and global family learning units. The program was developed by the Columban Fathers.

ANGEL — The Benedictine Sisters will offer a monastic weekend at Queen of Angels Monastery Oct. 11-13 for single women ages 18-45 who are interested in learning more about monastic life. Diocese of Baker • LA PINE — Redeemer Lodge is a brand new, 30-unit assisted living center that opened Sept. 14, thanks to parishioners in nearby Holy Redeemer Church. Members of the parish led the effort that resulted in the lodge’s construction. They were guided by Father Jim Radloff, who became pastor of Holy Redeemer in 1994. As he traveled his assigned area, he could see the need for such a facility and at that time, there was none available. The church is a short walk from the Lodge and Father Radloff is the center’s spiritual director.

Archdiocese of Seattle

• VANCOUVER — Thirty-six members of the youth ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Church made 3,056 crosses, one for each person who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Even the names of the terrorists were included since they “are victims of their own hatred,” according to one of the participants. The crosses were erected in a field across from the church, during a prayer service held Sept. 11 to honor the lives of those killed. The project was conceived by youth ministry director Jim Mains and carried out by the youth ministry. The youth had sent cards to firefighters, police and the Air Force but wanted something “a visible testament,” said Mains.

Diocese of Boise

• CATALDO — For 150 years the Coeur d’Alene Tribe has celebrated the Feast of the Assumption at the church at the Old Mission State Park. Bishop Michael Driscoll and Jesuit Father Thomas Connolly joined tribal members for the 150th event Aug. 15, which included a Mass, drumming and dancing, and a picnic lunch. Among the 800 people in attendance were some who came from England and Ireland. The church is the oldest building still standing in Idaho; it was built in 1853 by the Coeur d’Alenes under the guidance of Jesuit Father Pierre DeSmet.
• BLACKFOOT — Photos wanted. The St. Bernard Church centennial is two years away, but work has started on a pictorial history of the parish. Anyone having photos, especially graduation photos from St. Margaret School, is asked to call (208) 684-4200 or (208) 785-4956. Also wanted are wedding photos of couples married at St. Bernard, sacrament photos, and photos of military members from the parish.
