IDAHO CULDESAC — Bishop Michael Driscoll recently made his first visit to the historic St. Joseph Mission Church. The church was built by Jesuit Father Joseph Cataldo in 1874 to serve the Nez Perce Indians who live in the area. Jesuit Father J. Alfred Carroll of Spokane concelebrated Mass with Bishop Driscoll. A baked salmon dinner and fund-raiser followed, for the benefit of the Kateri Tekakwitha group from Sacred Heart Parish in Lapwai.
McCALL — More than 100 Catholic young people attended two Boise Junior High Camp sessions this summer at Paradise Point. The camps were sponsored by the Diocese of Boise. One of the highlights was having a special theme day around a saint: for instance, Hawaiian Day for Blessed Damien the Leper. Campers dressed to fit the theme and activities were planned around the theme and the virtues of the saint.
IDAHO FALLS — Rather than “walk the plank,” Mike Rybiki, Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 11841, decided to accept a “pirates’ challenge” to play in the annual KC softball game. The challenge was issued by “chief pirate” and Grand Knight Howard Clark of KC Council 16563. The game will take place Sept. 22 in the ball park at Christ the King Parish in Boise.
MOSCOW — Mary Ann Koth is the new campus minister at St. Augustine Catholic Center at the University of Idaho. She comes from Red Wing, Minn., where she had been director of a retreat center.
MACKAY — The high school youth group at St. Barbara Church designed and made a cross for their church community as a way of saying thanks for the support shown to the confirmation class. The cross, designed in the contemporary shape of a dove, is made of solid walnut.

MISSOULA — Boy Scout Shay McCarthy earned his Eagle Scout rank by building picnic tables for Legendary Lodge at Salmon Lake. McCarthy, a sophomore at Loyola Sacred Heart High School, has attended the diocesan summer camp held at the lodge and knew firsthand that there were no outdoor tables. More than 700 young people attend the camp each summer. The picnic table parts were barged across a narrow part of Salmon Lake to the lodge; it took six hours to unload and assemble the tables.
HELENA — Two “Legendary Afternoons” to promote vocations were held at the diocesan facility at Salmon Lake this summer. Bishop Robert Morlino hosted the afternoon events for young men age 14 to 28 who were invited to attend and consider vocations to the priesthood.

Archdiocese of Portland

PORTLAND — The Franciscan Sisters of Philadelphia have opened a new and smaller spiritual ministry in Portland, less than two years after closing their large retreat center on Palatine Hill. Guiding the start-up effort is Sister Carol Ann Warnke, formerly of St. Joseph Family Center in Spokane. The ministry is located in a former suite of medical offices in Portland. Also on the staff is Sister Carmel Gregg, who directed St. Joseph Family Center for a number of years. The ministry currently offers spiritual direction and marriage enrichment. Sister Carol Ann has also given several retreats.
PORTLAND — Parishioners at St. Mary Cathedral collected work boots in men’s and boys’ sizes for the parish’s outreach program to a migrant worker camp in Washington County.
VERBOORT — Thanks to an endowment that Father Jim Harris bequeathed to Visitation School, a new computer hub has been established in the school. It allows networking and Internet access for all the classrooms. The school has also been painted, inside and out, and is ready for the return of its 120 students.
ASTORIA — St. Mary Star of the Sea will take part in the three Ember Days as proposed by Archbishop John Vlaszny. The first Ember Day of prayer and fasting is Sept. 27.
Diocese of Baker WARM SPRINGS — Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Mission has signed a contract for repair work on their church. The building will gain a new roof, new stairs, and a new ramp.
