Archdiocese of Portland
PORTLAND — A show called “Art from the Streets” is on display at Blackfish Gallery this
month, featuring works from a number of places that serve the down and out. Several of the
works were done by homeless persons, the result of an art project started in 1999 at the St.
Francis Dining Hall at St. Francis Parish. A grant had been received by the directors of the
Dining Hall to purchase art supplies and people who came to the Hall were invited to try them.
The program proved so popular it gained a regular schedule.
SHERWOOD — Members of St. Francis Parish donated blood Aug. 22, to help a
parishioner who is suffering with leukemia.
ST. BENEDICT — The 31st annual Abbey Bach Festival was held recently at Mount Angel
Abbey. The festival began in 1972 under Abbot Damian Jentges. The festival has become so
popular that tickets are often sold out months in advance.

COTTONWOOD — Benedictine Sister Jean Lalande, who is prioress of the Monastery of
St. Gertrude, has been elected as councilor to the president of the Federation of St. Gertrude.
The federation is a group representing 18 independent communities and five dependent
monasteries of Benedictine women throughout North and South America.
In other news, the Benedictine Sisters at St. Gertrude offer an immersion experience
into the everyday life of a monastery with a retreat scheduled Aug. 24-30. Theme is “Discover
the Monk Within.” For more information call the retreat team at 208-962-3224 or use e-mail:

MONTANA
Diocese of Great Falls-Billings
BILLINGS — Since 1990 St. Bernard Parish has donated over $160,000 to St. Louis Parish and
its 11 chapels in Haiti which is one of the world’s poorest countries. The amount includes seed
money for a $60,000 school at one of the chapels. Parish involvement is deep. A team of
parishioners tries to visit the Haiti parish each year. Haitian crafts come to Billings to be
sold, with the proceeds going to help the poor. Individual parishioners sponsor individual
children for the school. St. Bernard Parish children collect school supplies for Haitian
children.
