150 Years Ago: 1852
Northwest: Archbishop Blanchet returned to the Northwest from a begging trip to Mexico. He successfully collected money, sacred vessels, pictures and vestments.
125 Years Ago: 1877
Spokane:
General Wheaton camped at what is now Riverside Ave. in Spokane. There he called a conference of missionaries and Indian chiefs, asking them to remain neutral and prevent further hostilities.
Kettle Falls: Baptismal records included those of St. Regis Mission, reported by Fathers Giorda, Grassi and Diomedi, who baptized 98 Native Americans and Euro-Americans.
100 Years Ago: 1902
Northport:
Northport, now a city of 1,200 people, was visited by Father Caldi of the St. Regis Mission. Father rounded up Catholics from the smelter and nearby farms. He built a new altar for $150 and installed the Stations of the Cross.
75 Years Ago: 1927
Pomeroy: Father Leo Ferland, while a pastor in Pomeroy, and although a Canadian, was appointed diocesan chancellor.
Rockford: Father Patrick Moffatt replaced Father William Condon at St. Joseph Parish.
Connell: Father John Campion traveled from Ritzville to care for the parish in Connell. He worked at eliminating the parish’s $3,500 debt, incurred by the purchase of the Old German Methodist church.
50 Years Ago: 1952
Boston:
The future Father Allan Amirault graduated from Cardinal O’Connell Preparatory Seminary. Father Amirault served as a priest in this diocese from 1958 until his death in a car accident in 1968.
Colton: Notre Dame Academy, a four-year girls’ high school, is now registering its new students, informing them of expenses, wardrobes, courses of study and general regulations. Principal is Sister Miriam.
25 Years Ago: 1977
Spokane:
Jake Schiffner, a longtime and prominent leader in church and civic activities throughout Spokane and the Inland Northwest, died at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Spokane: Brothers David Sifferman and Robert Eaton have signed on at the House of Charity to help the poor. They are members of the “Community of Reconciliation” founded in Virginia in 1973.
Walla Walla: The new officers elected for the St. Patrick Parish Altar Society are Mrs. T. Morrow, Mrs. F.E. Wright, and Mrs. A.A. Pruett. The outgoing president, Mrs. Joe Costanzo, was presented with a Hummel statue of the Madonna.
10 Years Ago: 1992
Spokane:
Louise Haspedis, 89, after 60 years of living in Spokane, died. She is survived by two sons, Father George and Walter; a daughter, Betty; and three grandchildren.
Spokane: The Inland Register celebrated its 50th anniversary. Former editors — Fathers Terence Tully and Michael Savelesky, Msgr. John Donnelly, Paula Stepankowsky, and present editor, Eric Meisfjord — submitted reflections and memories for the anniversary edition.
