Deacon Council Minutes
January 8, 2005
Present: Deacons John Ruscheinsky (Chairman), Eric Meisfjord (Vice Chairman/Secretary), Ken Dunlap, John Sicilia (ex officio)
Absent: Carol Dahl, Jeannie Toulou, Deacons David Dudinsky, Donald Whitney, Mike Breier, Msgr. Pedro Ramírez (ex officio), Father Mike Kwiatkowski (ex officio)
The meeting began with prayer at approximately 10:10 a.m.
Deacon Personnel: The Deacon Personnel Committee is examining the possibility of personnel shuffles in the spring, resulting from potential priest personnel shifts and assignment of eight newly-ordained deacons. The Committee hopes to have some announcements of deacon assignments by the end of February (yes, 2005).
Deacon Retreats: Deacon William Ditewig, Executive Director of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for the Diaconate, is leading the 2005 retreat. The dates: April 8-10. The 2006 retreat will be conducted by Deacon Owen Cummings, theology professor at Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore. Suggestions are welcome for future retreat leaders and retreat topics.
Future events:
Might a phone tree be helpful to publicize events? Volunteers are welcome to so participate. Contact Deacon John Sicilia if you would like to offer your services in this regard. For now, U.S. Postal Mail will be utilized as well as e-mail for event announcements and reminders.
The first 2005 workshop in the Continuing Formation/Continuing Education is set for Jan. 26, with a presentation by Father Steve Dublinski on deacons and liturgy. Contrary to what you might have read in the Deacon Newsletter, that event will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Please make a note of it. Father Joe Bell will be presenting in March; Father Pat Kerst, in May.
Father Pat Hartin’s preaching workshop on January 18 will begin at 10 a.m., not at 9 a.m., as previously announced, probably by that newsletter.
New Business: The new Directives for the Diaconate make mention of some sort of support gatherings – ministry reflection groups – for the newly ordained. What form should this take? Informal gatherings to share, discuss, compare? Something more formal? Suggestions are welcome.
Next meetings:
Saturday, June 11, 2005, 10 a.m., Bishop White Seminary
Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, 10 a.m., Bishop White Seminary
The meeting concluded at approximately 11:05 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Deacon Eric Meisfjord
Vice Chairman, Secretary
